How PIEAS GPA and CGPA are calculated

PIEAS grades on marks against a published table. Its Academic Rules and Regulations for BS Programs set out the percentage range, letter grade and grade point for every course, all on a scale of 4. Your grade depends on your own marks rather than on how the class did. PIEAS is often described as a relative-grading institute, but its own BS rules publish fixed bands, and those are what this calculator follows.

Two features of the PIEAS scale catch people out. First, the failure line sits at 45, not 50: marks between 45 and 49 earn a D worth 1.00 grade points, and that D still counts towards your GPA even though you are required to repeat the subject to reach a C. Second, there is no C- and no D+, so the scale drops from C (2.00) straight to D (1.00).

A+ covers 85 and above and A covers 80–84. Both carry 4.0 grade points, so the A+ is recognition on the transcript rather than extra points.

The Formula

GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

PIEAS computes GP, GPA and CGPA on a scale of 4. An F scores 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's GPA

A 15-credit-hour semester using PIEAS grade points.

Course 1, 3 CH, A+ (4.00)3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.67)3 × 3.67 = 11.01
Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.33)3 × 3.33 = 9.99
Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Course 5, 3 CH, B- (2.67)3 × 2.67 = 8.01
Total grade points12.00 + 11.01 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 8.01 = 50.01
Total credit hours3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
ResultGPA = 50.01 ÷ 15 = 3.33

Example 2: the 45–49 band that counts but must be repeated

A 3-credit course marked at 47%. Under PIEAS rules this is a D, not an F.

47 falls in the D band (45 – 49)3 × 1.00 = 3.00
Below 45 it would be an F3 × 0.00 = 0.00
Effect on a 15 CH semester3.00 ÷ 15 = 0.20 of GPA saved
ResultThe D counts towards your GPA, but the subject still has to be repeated to reach the required C

PIEAS's percentage, grade point and letter grade table from its BS Academic Rules. Note the D band at 45–49, which sits below the usual 50% pass line, and that there are no C- or D+ grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 45% a pass at PIEAS?

Partly. Marks from 45 to 49 earn a D worth 1.00 grade points, and PIEAS's rules state that this GP is counted towards the GPA calculation. However the student is required to repeat the subject to obtain at least a C (GP 2.0, or 50% marks). Below 45 you are declared failed with GP 0 and an F.

Does PIEAS grade relatively or absolutely?

Its BS rules publish fixed percentage bands for every letter grade, so this calculator treats PIEAS as an absolute-grading institute. PIEAS appears on some lists of relative-grading universities, but the regulations themselves define the letter and grade point directly from the percentage marks obtained in each course.

What CGPA do I need for my PIEAS degree?

The rules set separate thresholds. A subject needs 50%, which is a C worth 2.0. A semester and the degree both need 55%, which is a C+ worth 2.33. So passing a course is not automatically enough. The degree requires a CGPA of 2.33, not 2.00.

Does PIEAS have a C- or D+ grade?

No. The scale has ten levels: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D and F. There is no C- between C and D, and no D+ either, so the gap between C (2.00) and D (1.00) is a full grade point.

What is the difference between A+ and A?

Marks only. A+ covers 85 and above, A covers 80–84, and both carry 4.0 grade points. The A+ marks an exceptional result on the transcript but contributes identically to your GPA and cannot lift a CGPA above 4.0.

How is the final year project graded?

Numerically, and it counts. PIEAS's rules state that the BS final year project is assigned numeric grades and is counted towards the CGPA calculation, so give it its own row with its own credit hours exactly as it appears on your transcript.
