How the PIEAS aggregate score is calculated

PIEAS determines BS merit from three components: 60% from your entry test, 25% from HSSC Part-I and 15% from SSC. The entry test dominates, as it does at most of the selective engineering institutes, but PIEAS does something none of the others do with it.

The test part is a percentile, not a percentage of marks. A percentile is your position against everyone else who sat the paper. Score in the top 10% and your percentile is around 90, whatever the raw marks were. That is why the test row above asks for a single 0-100 figure and has no total field. There is nothing to divide by. PIEAS publishes your percentile with your result, so enter that number.

If you sat more than one accepted entry test, PIEAS uses the highest percentile in the aggregate. HSSC is Part-I only, and SSC uses your full Matric result. Enter both as marks obtained against the paper total.

The Formula

Aggregate = 0.60 × (Test Percentile Score) + 0.25 × HSSC (Part-I) Percentage + 0.15 × SSC Percentage

Taken from the PIEAS admissions FAQ. The test term is a percentile, not a mark percentage, so do not convert your raw test score.

Worked Examples

Example 1: a typical PIEAS applicant

Test percentile 85, HSSC Part-I 480 out of 550, SSC 960 out of 1100.

Test contribution (60%)85.00 × 0.60 = 51.00
HSSC Part-I percentage(480 ÷ 550) × 100 = 87.27%
HSSC contribution (25%)87.27 × 0.25 = 21.82
SSC percentage(960 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 87.27%
SSC contribution (15%)87.27 × 0.15 = 13.09
ResultAggregate = 51.00 + 21.82 + 13.09 = 85.91%

Example 2: percentile is not the same as marks

A hard paper where 62 raw marks out of 100 still put you in the top 10% of candidates.

Wrong: entering raw marks62.00 × 0.60 = 37.20
Right: entering the percentile90.00 × 0.60 = 54.00
Difference54.00 − 37.20 = 16.80
ResultUsing raw marks instead of the percentile understates the aggregate by 16.80 points

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a percentile score and where do I find mine?

Your percentile is the share of candidates you scored above. 85 means you did better than 85% of everyone who sat the paper. PIEAS reports it with your entry test result. It is not your raw mark, and it is not your mark as a percentage. On a hard paper the two can be very different.

Why does the test row have no 'total' field?

Because a percentile is already a 0-100 figure derived from your rank, not from a paper total. There is nothing to divide by. Every other row on this calculator takes obtained and total marks; the test row is the deliberate exception.

I sat more than one entry test. Which one counts?

PIEAS uses the best (highest) percentile score across the tests it accepts from you. Enter that one.

Is it HSSC Part-I or my full FSc result?

Part-I. The published formula names 'HSSC (Part 1) Percentage' specifically. SSC, in contrast, uses your complete Matric result.

What does the PIEAS entry test cover?

Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and English at FSc pre-engineering level, weighted towards conceptual understanding and problem solving rather than recall.

Does this aggregate guarantee admission?

No. PIEAS admits a small intake and closing merit is high. This computes your aggregate accurately; whether it clears the list depends on the programme and that year's applicant pool.
